Watercolour Whales Workshop

Watercolour Whales Workshop

Watercolours are well-loved for their vibrant colours and flowy nature. In this workshop, learn how to play with these water-based pigments and paint one (or a pair!) of dreamy, illustrative watercolour whales.

  • In this workshop, participants start off with watercolour warm ups which include getting used to materials and picking up basics of blending, bleeding and toning to achieve watercolour effects. Expect to explore basic understanding of values, tones and shadows to make illustrations more 3-dimensional and realistic.

  • Participants will also be taught watercolour blending techniques to colour in their whales, and how to add on certain illustrative details to embellish these magnificent sea creatures.

  • For the final artwork, participants will learn how to sketch their whales and compose the layout of their final piece, which will be on an A4-sized watercolour paper.

  • By the end of the session, you will be able to create your very own watercolour whale(s) artwork!

    • About the Instructor

When not running around outdoors under the sun, Tif (@tifaaani) spends time creating illustrations and stories from her collected inspirations. She mostly works with watercolor as a traditional medium, but also dabbles in digital art on the iPad. Her dreamy childlike illustrative style was born out of the belief that the artist is the child that never grew up, and that being able to create is wildly liberating.

    • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

      • What if I can’t draw?
This workshop is beginner friendly, so don’t worry even if you can’t draw. There will be step-by-step practices for our instructor to guide participants through so everyone achieves what they set out for in the first place!

      • Can I bring my own images?
No, as this is a workshop and not an art jamming session. We will guide participants according the theme for a better learning experience.

      • Can parents sit in with their kids for this workshop?Unfortunately, studio space is limited so we can only allow participants who have signed up for the workshop in. We understand that parents want to share the joy, but believe that kids should have their own space to create freely and independently.

Parents, you can hear all about the workshop from your kid when it’s over, and everyone can take home the created masterpieces

      • How can I frame up my artwork?
        - Always make sure art work is completely dried
        - Buy a nice frame from IKEA/Daiso
        - Place art work within frame and frame border, and hang it up on your wall!

      • Is watercolour water and dust proof?

Watercolour pigments are water-soluble, which means that they dissolve in water. Your painting is NOT waterproof even after it dries, so make sure to keep it away from water! It is also a good idea to keep it out of direct sunlight so the pigments stay vibrant.

Watercolour is not dust proof. Dust can and will gather on your painting if you leave it out in the open. We recommend framing your beloved painting up to protect it from dust and accidents. (Also, why not hang up your masterpiece and show it to the world?)

      • How do I remove dust on my watercolour
 painting?
        - Make sure your watercolour painting is completely dry

        - Use a soft brush (it can be a paintbrush as well) and make sure it is COMPLETELY DRY
        - Gently dust off anything on the surface of your watercolour painting with the dry brush. Make sure that there are no wet spots/droplets of water on the paper or brush, otherwise your painting will smudge!

      • What if I screw up my artwork? Can I redo?

A big part of learning and experimenting is messing up! Don't worry, our instructor will be able to advise on how you can further proceed.

      • Can I bring some materials home to practice?
All materials will be provided for the workshop :) You will bring home a set of materials too!

      • Do you sell art materials?
No, we don’t, but we’re happy to advise what materials are good and where to get these!

      • Is watercolour toxic?

Watercolour paints contain pigments and chemicals as all store-bought paints do. These usually contain low toxicity levels, but it’s all good as long as you don’t attempt o lick, taste or ingest the paint!

      • Can I not do watercolour, but bring my own craft materials and rent the space to work?

As much as we would like to have a space for all creatives and artists to hang out, studio space is limited! We will not able to offer this when art jamming sessions or workshops are happening, so as to provide our lovely participants with the best experience and space.
