  • What will I learn?

    Week 1: Botanical Blends!

Welcome to the workshop! Watercolour is all about having fun pushing pigment and water around on paper. In this first session, we will start off by familiarising ourselves with the materials and then warm up with the basics of swatching, blending and fixing values to achieve watercolour effects.

We will move on to paint simple botanical elements such as petals, leaves and some simple wildflowers.

Throughout this process, you’ll be able to practise your newfound watercolour skills and even pick up a tip or two on how to add more character and blends to your botanicals.

Later, we will combine these loose elements to create a whole botanical collage! We will also explore basics of composition so you transform separate elements into a harmonious art piece.

By the end of this first lesson, you will be able to create your very own unique botanical collage artwork made up of the various petals, leaves and wildflowers painted in watercolours.

    • Basic watercolour techniques, tips & tricks

    • An understanding of materials and choosing what works for you

    • Picking inspiration for botanical artworks

    • How to draw botanical elements such as leaves, petals and wildflowers (level up: do more advanced elements, such as garden insects, complex flowers… etc.)

    • How to build your colour palette such that all your botanical elements come together in harmony

    • How to compose your collage of these separate botanical elements for your final artwork

Week 2: Galaxy Night Sky

Now that you’ve picked up some basics from week 1, we’ll start to have some fun creating bigger pieces of art! In this second lesson, we will paint a night sky scene.
We’ll start off by exploring techniques such as flat washes, gradients and layers.

We will slowly build up our night sky background by adding various colours of the galaxy and allowing all of the pigment and water to come together.

We’ll play some more by exploring ways to create bigger paint bleeds, bigger patterns and textures.

To decorate our night sky, I’ll teach you how to paint some other elements such as mountains and trees! This will also touch on brush stroke techniques learnt in the first lesson.

By the end of this lesson you would have created your own galaxy sky blend.

    • Basic watercolour techniques, tips & tricks

    • An understanding of materials and choosing what works for you

    • “Modern” watercolour techniques: having fun with bleeds and blends to create a beautiful galaxy

  • About the Instructor

When not running around outdoors under the sun, Tif (@tifaaani) spends time creating illustrations and stories from her collected inspirations. She mostly works with watercolor as a traditional medium, but also dabbles in digital art on the iPad. Her dreamy childlike illustrative style was born out of the belief that the artist is the child that never grew up, and that being able to create is wildly liberating.

Check out Tif's Instagram for more of her works!

  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    • What if I can’t draw?
This workshop is beginner friendly, so don’t worry even if you can’t draw. There will be step-by-step practices for our instructor to guide participants through so everyone achieves what they set out for in the first place!
    • Can I bring my own images?
No, as this is a workshop and not an art jamming session. We will guide participants according the theme for a better learning experience.
    • Can parents sit in with their kids for this workshop?Unfortunately, studio space is limited so we can only allow participants who have signed up for the workshop in. We understand that parents want to share the joy, but believe that kids should have their own space to create freely and independently.

Parents, you can hear all about the workshop from your kid when it’s over, and everyone can take home the created masterpieces
    • How can I frame up my artwork?
      - Always make sure art work is completely dried
      - Buy a nice frame from IKEA/Daiso
      - Place art work within frame and frame border, and hang it up on your wall!
    • Is watercolour water and dust proof?

Watercolour pigments are water-soluble, which means that they dissolve in water. Your painting is NOT waterproof even after it dries, so make sure to keep it away from water! It is also a good idea to keep it out of direct sunlight so the pigments stay vibrant.

Watercolour is not dust proof. Dust can and will gather on your painting if you leave it out in the open. We recommend framing your beloved painting up to protect it from dust and accidents. (Also, why not hang up your masterpiece and show it to the world?)
    • How do I remove dust on my watercolour
      - Make sure your watercolour painting is completely dry
      - Use a soft brush (it can be a paintbrush as well) and make sure it is COMPLETELY DRY
      - Gently dust off anything on the surface of your watercolour painting with the dry brush. Make sure that there are no wet spots/droplets of water on the paper or brush, otherwise your painting will smudge!
    • What if I screw up my artwork? Can I redo?

A big part of learning and experimenting is messing up! Don't worry, our instructor will be able to advise on how you can further proceed.
    • Can I bring some materials home to practice?
All materials will be provided for the workshop :) You can purchase the materials from our art store too!
    • Do you sell art materials?
      Yes, we do :)
    • Is watercolour toxic?

Watercolour paints contain pigments and chemicals as all store-bought paints do. These usually contain low toxicity levels, but it’s all good as long as you don’t attempt o lick, taste or ingest the paint!
    • Can I not do watercolour, but bring my own craft materials and rent the space to work?

As much as we would like to have a space for all creatives and artists to hang out, studio space is limited! We will not able to offer this when art jamming sessions or workshops are happening, so as to provide our lovely participants with the best experience and space.
